Why Should You Register as a Jobseeker Early?
If your employment contract is ending soon—whether due to dismissal or the expiration of a fixed-term contract—the most important thing you must do is register as a jobseeker (Arbeitsuchend) as soon as possible.
By registering early:
You have more time to find a new job.
You can avoid financial disadvantages later on, especially delays or issues with unemployment benefits.
Once registered as a jobseeker, the Federal Employment Agency (Agentur für Arbeit) will contact you to:
Discuss suitable job opportunities.
Provide guidance for your next steps.
During this consultation, they will assess:
Your skills and qualifications.
What job options suit you.
What actions you and the agency can take together.
Easiest method: Online registration
Go to the official website.
Click "Vorgang starten" (Start process).
The agency is automatically informed.
Other ways to register:
In-person visit to your local Employment Agency.
Free phone call to: 0800 4 555500
Written request by post.
⚠️ Important: Only use one of these methods—no need to do all.
If you know your contract will end within 3 months, register immediately.
If you find out less than 3 months before, you must register within 3 days.
This is a legal requirement under Section 38 of the German Social Code (SGB III).
Late registration can cause delays or issues with unemployment benefits.
With online registration, you can:
Enter your work and education history.
Book an appointment directly online.
Specify your job interests and expectations.
Do everything easily from home.
This helps the agency assist you more efficiently and precisely.
Even if you’re still employed, if you know you’ll soon be unemployed, act early.
Registering as a jobseeker is simple, but it can have a big impact on your future job and financial security. To register and get more information, visit the official website of the German Employment Agency.
