Emergency medical technicians assess the health condition of sick, injured, or distressed individuals in medical emergencies. They decide whether a doctor needs to be called and do so if necessary.
Until the doctor arrives or the patient is transported, they perform initial medical treatment and, if needed, life-saving emergency interventions.
They prepare patients for transport and provide care during the journey (e.g., to the hospital). They monitor and maintain vital body functions.
After handing the patient over for continued treatment at the hospital, EMTs prepare their equipment and vehicles for the next operation, clean and disinfect rescue tools, and complete transport documentation, operation reports, and emergency protocols.
If working in internal rescue stations, dispatch centers, or joint emergency/fire service control centers, they also handle emergency calls and coordinate operations.
Emergency medical technicians can work in the following locations:
Emergency medical and patient transport services
Blood donation centers
Fire and rescue services
